Tenants forced to give up pets

Pet-friendly accommodation could be the next hot issue for politicians as more and more people are forced to surrender their ''fur-kids'' when they can't find homes that allow them.

The RSPCA's Michael Beatty said the number of people having to give up animals because they were banned in their new house or apartment was increasing.

He said 1283 pets were surrendered to the RSPCA in Fairfield near Brisbane in 2007 to 2008, 1354 in 2008 to 2009 and 1367 from October, 2009 to April this year.

''The numbers are probably much more because people tell us they have to give up their pet because of a marriage breakdown or something like that, when it's actually because the new accommodation they're moving to doesn't allow them,'' he said.

The RSPCA would keep the dogs and try to find a home for them.

Generally animals for which homes which cannot be found are put down.
